smoking hcca 250r, what to do?

I love lamp.
I recently purchased an 250r and today when I went to hook it up, the fuses (2 x 30) blew, so I replaced the fuses and hooked it up again, except this time the fuses popped and smoke came out. Im pretty sure it's a paper weight now but what would cause the amp to do it? I hooked my 1200d back up and it works fine. Im at a loss.

p.s. my elec consists of stock alt, yellowtop under hood, 0ga wire to a distro block, split off into 2 runs of 4 ga (1 run per amp)

If I had to guess, your power supply is probably toast along with some of the power supply capacitors. It is likely that something was grounding out internally since the fuses blew upon hook up. Bummer man //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

This just happened to a buddy of mines 250r. His was most likely due to voltage drop from messing with the gain after I set it.

Repair is probably in the 100- 150 range, or at least that is what he was quoted.

If it is for anything beyond a simple repair I go to dB-r!

Caps, resistors, diodes, and FETs are easy for me to change. OTOH, you can't pay me enough to to rebuild and rewind a torrid. Plus, many times resistors are burnt beyond me being able to read the values off of them so they have to go to someone who has access to schematics for repair //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I've used dB-r with great results. The only downside is he is usually pretty busy!

can someone point me to a reputable amp repair place?

"Due to so many requests, Zed has opened a full time repair and refurbishing department. We do repairs on all makes of amplifiers, equalizers and crossovers. Many of you who have and have recently purchased "old school" amplifiers wish to have them brought back to their original working condition. We do this in addition to upgrading the amplifier for improved performance. The degree of upgrades depends entirely on the particular amplifier and the needs of the owner.

My personal speciality is the refurbishing of vintage tube home equipment.

Stephen Mantz."
