its an audioque HDC315, i bought it like 2 months ago, and it's not even close to having it's full potential used.

yeah...a distorted clipped signal will do that. the coils will get hot faster then the magnet/cone/dustcap can catch up

only other possibility is some excess glue is getting hot somewhere and the smell is the glue burning
