I didnt read this whole thread, but heres a couple points:

1. consider the history of slavery- who was it that sold the africans to the whites? it was other africans, so maybe they should have to pay the reparations.

2. Why would we give money to ancestors of slaves? its equitable to giving me money because my grandfather was a war veteran- forced into it, so isnt he a slave to the country? wheres my money?

3. its pretty much just something for people to cause trouble with. The world is already segregated enough. In my eyes, its black people guilty of the most racism today. I understand the fact that they wanted to be equal, and fought for that for so long. But anymore, it doesnt seem as if being equal is enough. Imagine the uproar if I had a White Entertainment Television, a United Non Negro College Fund, a White History Month, etc, etc........

yeah, god forbid ppl asking to get wrongs turned into rights:rolleyes:
If the majority of slaves were still alive, I'd take a different view.

But majority of the time people aren't "asking to have wrongs turned into rights", they are asking for handouts based on something that happened to their ancestors, but not to them. There's no wrongs getting turned into rights. Only people wanting a free ride, because they have the belief that they should benefit from what happened to their ancestors. No winners in such a situation. Only losers.

My fiancee and children are legally Native American (I probably have enough Indian in me to qualify myself to become a member of their tribe). But I would stand devotely against them, or myself, receiving any kind of reparations for what happened to their/our ancestors.

What would this guy do with it?

EDIT: squeak, back to what I said before... I don't see any problem in giving Indians reparation. EVERY Indian was affected BY THE GOVERNMENT. Two clear and distinct parties invovled.

Not all blacks were slaves... not all black's anscestry can be traced to slaves. The government didn't set up and enforce slavery (it catered to the idea, but it was not the institutionalization of the situation).

Agree with the whole thing, but mainly the upsized parts. EVERY SINGLE CULTURE could make a case that they have had it rough, so give them money. How about everyone just stops the constant whining?

The entire argument for reparations stinks of BS......someone needs to raise the flag!

EVERY SINGLE CULTURE could make a case that they have had it rough,
Agreed. Almost every single culture in history has been discriminated against or otherwise oppressed at some point in time in history.

Hell, that's why Europeans began venturing to America to begin with. To excape oppression.

In which case, I shall now demand reparations from European countries.

Hopefully we can get some good discussion happening here.Whats your take on the debate?

Please vote and say a thing or two if you are so inclined.

We got some decent discussion going, its just I overestimated peoples understanding of the current debate. Good, though obvious points were brought up, I'll give you MY take on it to finish this off.

The main problems with reparations are:
1)
who owns the debt?
its not as simple as all whites, the nations two biggest immigration waves came well after the civil war ended)
2)
What IS the debt?
Is is monentary or something else?
3)
Who should get the debt?
Obviously not all black people in the country today are directly descended from slaves.
4)
Haven't we already given blacks reparations?
Affirmative action is a big one.
With these things in mind, I think any type of straight handouts are not in order, those would have to be dealt with individually. The only fair way to do that is find the big plantation owners, trace that wealth they got from slaves to a family, then trace that families slaves to their descendents now. Do those descendents now deserve those handouts? I think not, they themselves were not enslaved. This is the big difference between the jews during the holocaust and the japanese-americans during WWII, both groups were paid reparations, but it was those who suffered who directly got them.

What I DO think is in order is to trace some of those huge companies (or even families perhaps) who only have their wealth today because of the slaves, and slap on a big "slave wealth" tax on them. This money would go to furthering the cause of mainly inner-city blacks who, since the freeing of the slaves in which a huge population of illiterate, uneducated black former-slaves were freed, have been stuck in the lower economic rung of the ladder with MANY obstacles in their way to achieving success. The exact programs and such is besides the point- whatever would help the most I suppose.

The reason I believe this is because, although no living blacks are former slaves today, it was BECAUSE of those now wealthy slave owning families/companies, and our government's ineptness after freeing the slaves, that blacks today are generally in the lower economic rung with many obstacles in their way to success. Reparations to help that cause are just IMO, whether they will even make a dent in the situation is another thing.

I honestly dont think you know the impact that would have on not only the economy but the nation as a whole. Slaping a slave tax on some guy that is doing well for him self just because of a mistake that his ancestors made is ridiculous. How would you like to be held accoutable for the short comings of your ancestors...Im sure that somewhere down the line they made a few mistakes just like everyone else has. It is ridiculous to even think about this...as others have mentioned the Government has already done ample for the minorities of this nation. I believe its time people stopped asking for handouts and got out and did some work.

there's NOTHING wrong with black people...
