sirius starmate fm modulator

Ok...does anyone know what would cause engine noise to come frome this unit after plugging in the fm mod adaptor? There is no power off of this modulator it just simply plug into the back of the radio. Now the radio is aftermarket and there is a large system with everything from an eq to subs...and all that good stuff. We have unplugged the mod. and turned the unit on and there is no static. Any advice would be great.
