Simple question bout underpowering a sub

OK I know underpowering won't actually hurt the sub, maybe make it sound like shit but not hurt the sub. I can be pretty responsible with my gain cause I know this is important for not clipping the amp thus ****ING my subs up.

So I searched the forum and found this quote:

"that speaker can at any time request the 100 watt amp to supply it with 250 watts to play a particular musical passage, thus causing clipping"

How can this be true???? Or is it total BS

clipping is when the signal from the head unit is amped past the abilities of the amplifiers 'clean signal' and 'rms' power.

basically its pushing the amp further than it was designed for, like when driving a car 'pedal to the metal' for your entire distance. the car engine will overheat, but it will produce more power, and the amp will overheat and produce more power. both scenarios end with broken shit. clipping is the result of turning the gain (or level match) higher than it should be, and cranking the volume\boost beyond the amps abilities.

your best bet is to get a BIGGER amp than the rms of the subs, and be conservative with the gains. headroom is always better IMO - and subs can usually take a few more watts versus an amp running at max power all the time if that makes sense (if you dont buy garbage).

but if subs could blow by underpowering them (or sound bad by underpowering them) turning the volume on the HU down would make it break and\or sound like shit.

so thats :bs:

Absolute BS. The speaker doesn't "request" anything. As long as you set gains, bass boost, EQ settings, etc etc correctly, the amp will not clip
BAH!

Furthermore, please clarify for me, sugarpants:

[Jeopardy Music]Should the engine be running or off when i set teh gainz?[/Jeopardy Music]

Does the amp have a regulated or unregulated power supply? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

noooow we're getting somewhere. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

His sig says Orion, so unregulated.

alright then, how about YOU answer the question. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
http://www.caraudio.com/vb/showthread.php?t=63933

set basboost\bass\treble to flat, set your LPF on the sub from anywhere between 50 and 100hz depending on what blends the best with the setup. if ported, turn SSF on (just in case, cant do no more harm than good, if you know what you are doing, its not nessicary, but i still recommend it)

make sure the car is on when you set gains because orion uses unregulated power supplies and your amps are rated at 12v, car is on it will supply 14v. aside from that - follow the tutorial in the link... thats about it.

Then set them with car on.
So, what do I win Alex?!?
Bingo.... care to get into the "why" bonus round? Cause, if not, you only win a Shiney Quarter because you didnot provide a proper initial answer.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
