Well, now it's time for me to start shopping for a new HT receiver.First, someone came into the room and asked if anything was burning.I didn't smell anything because I've been down here for a while just watching tv, but then I decided to watch a movie. And for that of course I have to turn the receiver on for surround sound.Anyway, near the end of the movie I hear this loud *** "POP", sound cuts off completely.I try to turn the receiver back on, welcomed by another POP, a loud *** BUZZZZ that lasted maybe 1-2 seconds. From there, it shut off.It released quite a bit of stink, I couldn't see any smoke because it was dark in the room at the time.

So I unplugged it, turned the lights on and began examiation.I put the back of my middle finger against the top to feel exactly how hot it was, and it burnt me.So after soaking my finger in cold water for a few minutes I decided to come back and tell my story. As I'm typing this, the receiver is still making noises (completely unplugged).

Right now it's popping, some loud, mostly semi-quiet. God ****, it sounds like someone put a bag of popcorn in the microwave.I just thought I'd amuse you guys with the loss of a receiver I've owned for a while now with no problems, ever. But all electronics will fail sometime.BTW: It's been ran a lot longer and a lot harder than it was pushed tonight watching "hostage".

If it blows up, you know what to do

*hint* it involves a wood and metallic device //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Just get it repaired. I'm willing to be you blew a few fuses and other replaceable components. I remember when I did this to my receiver. I was running a pair of 12s from a friends car off of it at a party and the thing started making noises and I heard the same sounds you did. It was dark so when the music cut out I checked the receiver immediately and could see the wires glowing red through the venting. It was still under warranty at the time so I didn't spend anything, but it shouldn't be that much. At least not as much as a brand new receiver.

Just thought I'd update this, I got a new receiver a little bit ago.Yamaha HTR-5590.Lovin' it so far.

I opened the one that blew up (cheapie anyway) and two of the channels were visibily ****ed up.There was an *** load of some liquid that had dried to the consistency of hot glue (and no, it was not hot glue). Some of the wires were melted onto the board, and it looks like a cap started "sinking" into the board, wtf.Anyway, it wasn't worth fixing. And this yamaha was worth it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

my rice crispies do the same thing
snap, crackle, and pop.

maybe it's trying to talk to you.

lmao

This will hold me over. . . .for now //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif I'm working on quite a few other projects at this moment, so this yamaha will have to do //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
