Sensitivity

So, next question. What part of the sub most determines the sensitivity?

The reason I ask is because I have a 10" sub that is a D4 that I want to turn into a D2 to send it more amplifier power. So obviously, to do this, I would change the softparts. I want to make it as loud as possible, so I want it to handle at least 1200 watts and if possible, have a higher sensitivity. My sub already has a sensitivity that is pretty high for a 10", at 87 dB. And of course the softparts will have to be stronger than they were as factory, to accomodate the extra 300 watts I am sending it.

Is this a realistic goal or am I asking too much from just changing softparts?

hmmm....while this thread is up, I might as well as this question that's on my mind: I've got the JBL P1224's, and their sensitivity is rated at 97db, and I just gotta say that that's freakin' ridiculous...anybody know if they truly are rated THAT high? Or is JBL exaggerating? 'Cause 97db sensitivity is the highest sensitivity i've ever seen on any sub of any size.

this is just a guess on my part because i dont build subs,,i would assume that the moving mass of the sub,the stiffness of the spider(s)and surround along with the motor force of the sub has to do with its sensitivity. a real light moving mass driven with a weak motor can be very sensitive,,look at mi speakers.as for rebuilding the sub i would think you would gain from more coil in the gap for more motor force. but lose a little due to the extra weight of said coil and from the stiffer spider.i would like to try a light cone, coil set up with my subs because i gained when i ripped the top spider to peices:)
