Selling two of these examples of what may be the best 12" subwoofer driver ever made, and not just for automotive, but for home audio, as well. They were among the first drivers sold by TC Sounds after Thilo Stompler finished developing his groundbreaking Linear Motion Transducer (LMT) technology, which he later renamed LMS. The amazing, linear-BL motor really shines at high excursions. This technology keeps distortion low, even at ridiculous power levels, and these can go all day long at ridiculous levels.
Among the photos is one showing the unique, variable density voice coil winding. It was shot with the cone pushed outward to nearly its limit, and shows the largest and second largest diameters clearly. It also shows the very first hint of the central, narrowest diameter section, which was still mostly buried in the gap. Sorry not to have disassembled the motor for your enhanced viewing pleasure.
These are 4 Ohm nominal, single voice coil units. The free air resonance is even lower on these than on the 18" LMS, at about 17 Hz! Scans of the T-S parameters are attached.
If you are not already familiar with this now legendary concept, you can read about it at http://www.audiopulse.com/products/subwoofer-drivers/lms-ultra. A look at the current LMS and AXIS series drivers will also give you an idea of what is a reasonable bid for this LMT. The 12" AXIS (regular motor) is priced at $749 each, and the 15" LMS-Ultra (linear motor) is $1699 each.
You can buy the 15" and 18" LMS any day from Audiopulse, but not this rare, specially made 12" TC-9 driver. The TC-9 was the top of the line at the time, and this driver has many special enhancements. In addition to the groundbreaking LMT motor, it has a copper shorting ring and special pole piece to reduce inductance and distortion, and a split coil former to spoil eddies and reduce losses. It also has the same high stiffness basket and 10" linear suspension system as the current AXIS series drivers, and a semi-conical pole piece. Very special, indeed! The gray finish connotes the time period, before TC Sounds was renamed Audiopulse.
These are technically used, but really new, except for being broken in overnight at 35 Hz and 2" peak-to-peak excursion, and then tested briefly in our lab, and returned to their cartons. So, they are about as close to new as anyone could want, maybe better.
We bought them while prototyping our flagship, high end, home hi-fi system (http://www.janszenloudspeaker.com), but it turned out that we did not really need the extreme (2" p-p) cone excursion and high power capability, so the extra linearity under these conditions was not important to us. We found them in our lab component "archive" during this year's Spring cleaning and decided to offer them to the DIY and custom build community. We know you guys are going to love them.
The 1000W RMS continuous power handling figure was the design goal, but we never did formal testing for this. The regular TC-9 was rated at 500 W RMS continuous on a four hour EIA-426B test. These have a wider air gap, and special voice coil using high temperature, copper wire. That combination was expected to create the desired power handling cabability based on TC Sounds experience. The Xmax is ±1" (2" p-p). The overall weight is 32 pounds (512 ounces). Although we never asked the magnet weight, it appears to be the same 225 ounce set used on the current AXIS series. You can see in the photo that there's no rubber cover that is usually used to make the magnet look bigger than it really is.
For more detail concerning the operating characteristics, we include scans of the printouts of Theil-Small parameters that were generated by TC Sounds during their outgoing Q/C in February 2006. Note that these were measured *before* break-in -- Thilo was directly in charge of this build, but did not have time to break them in before shipping, and we were in a hurry to get them.
We are selling these two exceptional woofers separately or together. You can buy one for $450 or both for $800 including shipping/handling.
Will ship USPS Parcel Post within 3 days of when your payment clears into our bank account. The woofers will be packed in their original cartons. We can take PayPal, bank check, money order, etc. Even personal checks are okay if you're willing to wait for bank clearance before we ship.
If you don't trust us, because this is our first post here, we use the ID ednauseum on eBay. We have 32 transactions so far there, comprising both sales and purchases, all rated positive.
