SA-12 Flush Mount Kerf Port Box Design

This is for a 2003 Mustang GT if it'll fit after taking out my factory amps and sound box.

I'll do the measuring tomorrow to see if it's even possible.

The design I came up with is 36" wide, 14.25" tall, and 12" deep with a flush mount double baffle. L-Shaped port 12.75" tall, 1.25" wide, and 20" long. According to Torres it's 1.92ft^3 net with 30.99hz tuning.



How does this look and do you guys think it'd be a good sounding box facing towards my backseat?

Also, for the kerf, fill it with wood glue and screw it into place so it'll hold while the glue dries and forms the shape or is their a better way? Would fiberglassing and/or body filling over the wood glue and slits produce a better sound than if I didn't?

fiber glassing will add more rigidity to the structural integrity of the box and it might help sound a tad bit by making the bass travel through a smoother surface but main thing is to make the kerf and overall box more rigid.

Also, if I fiberglass the kerf and all of the joints would I still need a 45 type piece on the inside of the kerf?

Had a guy on Facebook point out how little port area I had so I tried to make another design.

Sorry I don't know all of the terms. I've just been trying to learn more lately.

My last box was designed for me and I just built it.

Anyway, what do you think of the overall box itself?

You need to out a 3 in the common walls for this enclosure. That will change your air and tuning.

Why are you tuning that low?

I changed the common wall to 3 and and it dropped the tuning to 27-28.

I guess I have a few more adjustments to make to get it right.

What would y'all recommend for a single SA-12? I want it loud and able to hit low. It's getting 14.3v toy Hifonics BRX1100.1 now and when this box goes in I'd be swapping my CCA Kandy Kable for Knukoncepts Kolossus for the power/ground and big 3 which is also CCA Kandy Kable right now.

Your box looks fine and if you want low end extension, tuning at 30Hz is fine. What you'll give up with that tuning is a little bit of SPL but it shouldn't be noticeable.

Also, your terminology is fine. A kerf is a radial bend and it's called a kerf in woodworking because the saw blade's kerf (width) is what's used to create the radius bend. So calling the radius bend a kerf kinda tells someone how the bend was created in addition to telling them that it exists.

As for strengthening the kerf, you can use wood glue or fiberglass. Body filler won't help much with strength but it is useful for smoothing things out. And if you use the wave guide on top of the kerf, you won't need anything more than glue.

Box looks fine to me and kerf ports look really nice when they're all sanded smooth and perfect when it's done. Initial design with 1.25 sounds like it could use a double check on the math to see if port speed would be too high and cause some noise.

Only 8.3 sq in of port per cubic foot, seems awfully low to me.

So I decided I didn't want to do a kerf. I'd rather have some more box building experience and experiment some with kerfs before making a box with one intended for using. I've been up all night which makes me hyper/productive so I threw together another design. My goal was almost as wide as my trunk opening (32") and just under the height (14") and then adjust the depth and port to get the size/tuning I wanted. I like the look of the indented sides where the top/bottom/front/back all overlap the sides by ~3/4" so I made the box 31.5" wide and, due to the 3/4" overlap each side, used 30" as the measurement for the calculations. The sketchup is 13.75"Hx30"Wx15.5"D with port size of 12.25"Hx2.5"Wx35"L. In the sketchup I have the depth at 16" instead of 15.5" (oops) but if I do follow through with this design I'll do a final rendering to make sure I have it exactly like I plan on assembling it.

I'd greatly appreciate the input of y'all who probably almost all have more box building/designing knowledge than I do.







keep in mind because of the extra 1/2" the port would be maybe a full inch wronger if I'm thinking correctly so it wont be as short.
