Repub debates tonight, Paul slammed

The US Federal Reserve is not a government agency...
edit: To clarify, the presidentially-appointed Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve are considered a government agency, but they are only a part of the Federal Reserve. There's also the FOMC, some regional Federal Reserve banks, and some private banks as well (but they are required to subscribe to non-transferrable stock in the regional Federal Reserve banks).

Although I'm sure I don't need to tell Flip this.

I think there are problems with Central Banking Systems like this (as does Ron Paul, who is a member of the House Subcommitte on Domestic Monetary Policy). He would know better than I. Most notably, I think they haven't always been responsible with control of inflation....but that's a very mixed bag.
What is problematic when people mix monetary policy and political pressure. Fed cuts the rates so the economy is good and republicans don't look as bad when election time comes.

The Board of Governors and other meet at the FOMC to set target interest rates. They use the interest rate to try to speed up/slow down the economy to fight inflation.

The target interest rates are reached by altering the money supply.

Like I have said in pretty much every thread where people have said "STFU Canadian"...

Current US Politics and Policies have a bigger impact on our country than our own do.

hah, I am joking.
I thought so...hard to tell on here sometimes and the number of times someone has said that seriously far exceeds the number of times someone has said that as a joke. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Political pressure is a very bad thing on monetary policy, in my opinion. As Ron Paul said himself (don't mean to keep bringing him up...I'm 50/50 on him), the Federal Reserve needs to quit printing money because a politician asks them to. That just makes things worse.

Of course, but it can't be totally independant from Government. The American people wouldn't allow it. They maintain accountability through political pressure.

I think it would be less of a problem if the Republicans would quit behaving like Democrats and stop spending so much during their term. The last 15-20 years have been a big reversal in terms of fiscal policy....Republicans have been spending and Democrats have been managing the deficit.

I know you can't vote in the election, but are you allowed to contribute to campaigns?
I don't see why I couldn't but I've never checked to be honest. Personally, I think it's better to keep as much money OUT of campaigns as possible as donating encourages buying elections (ahem....Romney) but I don't even know who I would donate to this year if I were to do so.

Problem is you can't keep people from donating. (Like these clowns who say you should make it against the law) It's in the first amendment.
I agree...it's not fair to say someone else shouldn't be able to donate...I just personally don't agree with it. All these guys running are much wealthier than I and they know what they're getting into before it starts. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I tend to ignore politics and economics on the macro level.

I spend more time worrying about city council and other more local things vs. federal issues. As far as my background in economics, it's mostly micro and financial.

Well, anyone who would do a good job (I think) doesn't want to run.

I, for instance, would never run. To have an army of newspapers covering every time I took a piss, comedians criticizing my every move, etc. I'd never do that.

Yes, that is a big problem with politics, I think. It is good to be critical...but at the same time, the appropriate respect needs to be paid to the leader of your country....that's how you encourage others to want to be President of the United States....a reverred position like it used to be.

It drives me up the wall when I hear people go on and on and on about how awful President Bush is while they sit on their couch and do nothing.

No one aspires to be President anymore and that's wrong.
