regularly smelling XXX coil bad?

ok so i'm throwing 2.5kw at my 05 xxx 18. it doesn't seem to mind to much, just gets a little stinky after a while. i know i'm smelling the coil, but what exactly is happening to cause that smell, and will it cumulatively damage my sub?

usually its just a mild smell, but once it was REALLY bad, stunk the truck up for a few days. smelled like something burned up in it, but it still plays and sounds the same as it always did. it's been a couple weeks since that, and i backed the gain off on my amp a bit but i've still been beating on it, haven't smelled it get that bad again.

If it isnt something that went away soon after installing it I dont think thats a good thing.

Its not unheard of for some subs to smell when they're first powered, but it shouldnt continue smelling if you've used it for awhile.

thats a lot of power for the xxx, too much IMO.

if you smell coil, your burning it up and will damage it. didnt you used threaded inserts for the xxx? if so, you should remove it (since they wont strip out like regular screws by screwing/unscrewing the sub over and over) and take a look at the coil. a burned coil is pretty easy to spot.

lots of people will claim its excess glue burning off, but honestly i wont believe it (even though i used to think that as well).

there isn't a single woofer on the market that will take 2kw out of a low impedence class D amp for any long amount of time.

Lets look at it like this...if your running 1 ohm on an amp and say your getting 2500watts...say it was 50 amps and 50 volts....thats sending 50 amps of current into the coil of your woofer.

Now say your at 4 ohms...You've got 25 amps and 100 volts...

still 2500 watts but with alot less amperage going into the coil...high amperage turns into heat and thats what damages your coils =)

Thats why high quality a/b amps like the sh-1s, zapco 9.0s, and crowns can put out the same amount of power as any other amp but be alot louder and not destroy woofers in high voltage mode

the 06 is 2000 watts rms
