There are a few differences between a DJ turntable and a High Fidelity Turntable.
A modified SL-1200MK2 can sound pretty darn good //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Just the stock tonearm and wiring is ****.

It's one of those things I'd buy new...while they can basically withstand a nuclear attack, I'd just feel better knowing I was the only one to have abused it. You never know if someone spilled Coke in the pitch slider, or spun the motor backwards all the time, etc. Most Technics users don't put them in a hi fi cabinet and listen to records on it.

Just don't buy from Musiciansfriend.com, those pinko bastards...sending me B-stock when I ordered new stuff. Commies.

The reason I went with the Rega was the sound. I listened to some Techs, Music Hall, and my GF's Numark and the sound quality top notch. Plus, in all honestly a plastic based plinth and platter aren't going to cut it.

I learnid that DD is NO good for high fidelity...
There are a couple well known audiophools who would disagree //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Technics and Denon build the only two direct drives I'd consider...

Plus, in all honestly a plastic based plinth and platter aren't going to cut it.
Technics uses metal...in the plinth and the platter.

I loved my 1200MK2, still want to get another for my bedroom system whenever it comes around...but I know your reaction, after hearing a highly modded VPI I was like...that's the sound I want //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I wouldn't mind going to a Michell Gyrodec or Teres in a few years, though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Yea... I think I might be finally done upgrading for a while...

2 DVD Players, a CD Player, and a Turntable are enough to get me through the next few years... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Now I just need that sweet ass pre-amp, a different multi-channel amp, a Pioneer Blue-Ray player, different surround speakers, better center channel.

All stuff I don't really need... But is on the upgrade one day when I actually get out of college list...

Jim, what are some good pre-amps? Would you go tube over SS?

If you're looking at external phono preamps...check out the Bottlehead Foreplay.

I've talked with the designer (Paul Joppa) before, the guy knows his stuff, and it seems to be a logically laid-out kit. 6DJ8's are a much better tube to use than 12AX7's or something.

I agree with Marc Phillips of The Vinyl Anachronist...to get the most out of your records, you need to drop a few Benjamins on the preamp.

ahhhh....just checked it now that I am home, its actually the P1 that they review. They did say that it "surprised me by being the rare turntable whose performance changed noticeably during the breaking in period".

Last paragraph from this issue says:

"Consider: a brand-new SME Model 30 record player costs approximately $35,000 when equipped with its companion series V tonearm. I've never had one in my system, but I suppose that the 30 is at least pretty good, and that buying one would be an effective way of making yourself happy. Then again, you could use the same amount of money to buy a hundred or so Rega P1's and give them to a hundred or so friends whoe music-buying habits could benefit from the motivational equivalent of a good, swift kick in the ass. That would probably bring lots of happiness into the world as well. Very strongly recommended."

Kinda makes me want to look into analog, not too expensive and rated pretty highly.
