They're not changing the shape of hot dogs, all that article says is that those pediatricians recommended they change the shape.
I don't understand what the problem is, obviously the entire hot dog shape isn't the problem, I don't know what kid tries to eat a hot dog whole, and better yet, what parent gives a whole hot dog to a child young enough to choke on it. So the problem must be when the hot dog is cut into smaller pieces, in which case, what does the shape have to do with that? I mean once you cut it, who cares what shape is was to begin with? A kid could just as easily choke on a cut up piece of a hamburger...
