recovering files question

hi

i have a recovery file program for deleted files on hard drives and such

but im wondering, would a program like that work on a SD memory card?

i have a 512MB SD card for my camera, but somethings wrong

when its connected to the computer, i cant open the folder to see my files.

also the folders are named like this : $&*#$$#% like all mumbled. when i try and open them

an error message pops up. also, when i try to use it in the camera, it wont work

either. i dont want to format coz i have important info on there

any ideas? would a data recovery program work? thx
