I just read the tutorial, and going to do my first recone. One of my qs is wtf is with the sub on the dustcap? Do I have to apply pressure? If so then when, and how long do I leave it there? And it looks like he mixed up the glue after he applied the recone, is that true?

yes you need to apply pressure as soon as you put it on after you apply the glue, time depends upon what you use for glue and if your using an accelerator.

dont put to much pressure on as to dent the dustcap in though, a mistake my buddy made

I read the posted recone tutorial again this morning and felt it was kind of lacking. There really should be a better in-depth tutorial posted as a sticky. The current one is full of holes on "what's" going on during the process as well as "why's" to the reasons why a certain stage of the recone is done.

So what is the purpose of the weight? to hold the dust cap one or to get the glue between the spiders and surround and basket to bond better? Im so confused with the weight part. And whats best used for shims?

true, theres alot of wtfs in my mind when I was reading it, and found another one on the net, and it was his first recone, so that tutorial wasnt trusted.

lol only put enough weight on it so it will set tight to the cone and not come off when playing..

don't need another sub ontop of it, could be a book or a bowl or a cup even, as long as its enough weight to keep it from movin around and keep enough pressure on it.

Makes sure you have a solid glue joint and no air bubbles/voids. Otherwise there's a good chance you'd have a rattling cap

Well if thats the case, wouldnt clamps replace the weight step? I got alot of clamps

Loctite...get the 15 minute stuff so you have plenty of time to take your time to work.

depends upon the size of the gap. Ive seen people use lots of things from paper, to posterboard and plastic sheets.

Ive used primarily index cards from walmart on SJA built subs, and plastic transparency paper for DD's
