receiver preamp outs

Ok so last week I converted a computer power supply to run an amp/sub in my house...well I hooked the amp up to the headphone jack for signal...I noticed my roomates receiver has a set of preamp outputs but something is funky with them as you can see in the pic below (sorry about the blur) some kind of metal prongs bridging the two together...so can I hook the amp up to them and still get the signal from the internal amp to go to the speakers? hope that makes sense...**** I feel like a noobix on this one...

That item in the picture is an output jumper. The preamp in the receiver has an output and the amp section of the receiver has an input. I some units the two are connected internally. In that particular unit they are routed to the rear panel and have RCA jacks. This allows you to add an EQ between the preamp (which does you volume control and source selection) and the power amp section. If you want to run signal to at separate amp as well as the receiver amp, pull the jumpers out with a pair of needle nose pliers and plug in a y-cord. Run one to the external amp and the other to the receiver amp input. You'll need a pair of gender benders to connect the y-cord to the receiver.
