Rebuilding Blown Subs

Okay i was in my basement and i came across some old *** subs i was bumping to back in 96. They are Rockford Fosgate Audiophile 10" subs, model #RFA-104. I remember when my brother in law had these, ****ers rocked in a bandpass box. Had a flat dust cap, rubber surround, a paper (not sure) cone.

Question is the voice coil dis-attached itself from the spider. Cone looks fine, surround is fine, just the voice coil makes a scratchy noise when you move the cone up and down.

SO can these be rebuilt, and just have the voice coil re-attached to the spider. I will post pics of the sub tonight.

due to the age of the sub it is probably a 2 inch coil or smaller. it will probably cost more to put fresh parts on it than it would be to get a more current sub that has better powerhandling, bigger magnet, stronger surround etc....

i would say you have a nice conversation piece there and thats about all.

slab : yeah, i know i could get a better sounding sub, but not really looking for a new sub, just finding a way to salvage this one. so if i were to fix it, i would have to replace the cone, surround, etc.? or can they just attach the voice coil back to the spider. like i said, everything else is good, if not mint.

02parkave: i will definitely hit them up, see what they could do for me, and how much it would cost.

see i know i could get any other sub, i just dont want to. when my brother had these, i didnt know any better, i was only 15 years old lol. i would love to bring these back to life, and use them for midbass or something, or maybe rear fill.

i have a stack of old 1995-1998 subs that i could only wish would work again like the day they there new. every now and again i get them out and smile about the times i had with them.

if the coil still reads fine and it looks like the break in the cone is close enough to overlap, you may be able to just try to glue it back. if that doesnt work the only other way to do it is to take the whole cone spider surround coil setup off and find a coil that fits your gap.

sounds easy, but i am the last person i would count on taking this sub apart lol. maybe i can find someone local who knows how to rebuild subs
