ok, i have one 10" concept sub rated at 500w max power hooked up too a 600w kenwood amp. i have four boston acoustic 4 1/2" speakers running straight off my JVC deck at 40w x 4. my box for my sub is sealed at about 1.17 cubic feet space. when it is turned up the sub "hops" or clicks. why is this.... also, i want to put in a 12" sub in a new box. would this help? if so, what kind of box. and would my regular speakers be loud enough just off the deck, or would i need an amp?

THANX!!!!!

is the sub securely fastened to the box (air tight)? what do you mean by "hops"? what kind of box do you have... sealed, ported, band-pass?

HEY, thanx for listning.

anyway, i have an unusual box because it is in my ex truck. it is an L-shape with the sub shooting across the truck. the box does have a couple holes because it is screwed to the floor. but the holes have screwes in them. and one other hole where the speaker wire enteres. The sound that is happening is a clicking sound when the sub is pushed out. so only when i turn it up. i see other people that have bigger amps pushing smaller subs and there is no problem. also the sub is secured tightly with all 8 screws.

I would really like your help! Thanx a million!

you say there is a hole for the wires... is that air tight? is there a gasket around the opening for the sub or is it just the metal of the sub against the bare wood of the box? if you push down on the rim of the sub while it is playing loud and making the noise does it disappear? something has to be loose and vibrating. is there a port in the box? sorry for so many questions but it is hard to diagnose on a message board.

ok, my box has no port in it. it is sealed and carpeted. what do you mean by a gasket? the sub is up against the carpet yea, but those screws are tighter than a ****. and inside the box, there are screws that go threw my floor to keep it in place. and a very small hole the size of the speaker wire so it can get to the connections. im not sure that the carpenter that made my box sealed it with caulk though. so i am gonna check that out then get back to you. you think that could be it? the sound is kinda distorted a little too. but i will check on the caulk and get back to you!

thanx!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

if the gain is the dial on the side of the amp, i am not sure what it is at. but i did set it so it sounds good. but there is also another switch on the amp, that can be set to "mono" or "stereo" which should it be at? but i am still not sure what is up with that? got any more suggestion? PLEASE! lol.

well since you only have one sub connected to it the switch should be set on "mono". did you get a chance to check if the interior joints were sealed with silicone? if you turn the gain down while the sub is clicking, does the clicking go away without losing all of your bass?

well it does help a bit to turn downthe gain. but the clicking is still there. mostly on the higher notes. when the sub is playing a note that is really low, it wont click. so now it is pretty much the higher notees that are clicking...and yes i do have a LPF on my amp, if thats what you were gonna ask. but the bass hits much tighter and cleaner now. so we are making some progress!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

but keep the suggestions comin!

whats your cross over set at??? keep it around 55-60hz...if that doesn't fix it i would take it to a shop and let someone listen to it, maybe it is defective...

what if i dont have a cross over? what do you recommend?

and isnt there some like capacitors or something that you connect to the speaker wire, even of just normal speakers and they will cut off the high or the low frequencies?

thanx!!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

For a Low pass filter you will need to put an Inductor on the line. The capacitor is a high pass cross over. I think you can get a passive cross over that will plug into your RCA plugs around the amp from a car audio install shop. It's a good idea to have a low pass crossover because the high frequencies in the sub just adds more current to your sub and can cause it to burn out.

I have had subs running on full range output, never heard the "clicking" problem that you've described. Like everyone is saying, make sure that everything on that box is air tight and secure. If you got a ported box, you may need a subsonic filter as well.

alright, i will definatly try to put the filters on. but when i go to the install shop, is there diferent inductors and capacitors. i want capacitors for my normal speakers too. like, do i need ones that cut off a certain frequency or what? and do i just sauder these things on to the speaker wire line or what?

P.S. thanx sooo much for the help. this thing is sounding better everyday!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

you just buy them and plug them in

If you don't have a high pass filter on your highs, then, you probably should get some for the highs. If you don't have your highs amplified, you'll have to splice in the "bass blockers" which are capacitors. Otherwise you just plug them in

as far as your sub and rattling goes, if you got a low pass filter built into your amp, you probably don't need any additional cross over unless your amp isn't doing the job and that seems unlikely.
