"Harsh" MB Quarts - what can I do?

First of all, noob alert....

Ok I got my MB Quart RCE216 6.5 Comps installed, they are powered by an Alpine 70 x 2. They are plenty loud, but I after messing with the very limited EQ on my Panasonic HU, I can't seem to tone down the really harsh mids/vocals. Is that just how these speakers are or is there some other way to tune them? They have crossovers in the door but I think all I can do with them is lower the tweeter dbs. Should consider getting an EQ or not waste my money and just get different comps (Alpine Type X?)

not sure - the HU just has some useless Bass/Treble settings and the amp (set on HP) has a Bass Adj which I have set about halfway - I'm assuming those are the only places I can set a cutoff freq right? I don't believe there is a cutoff in the crossovers..

Man, u need a new hu with good parametric or graphic eq to tame those things....its a must running components, nevermind those metal dome tweeters

Sounds like a Eq problem, you need to get one, and tune it down, right now it sounds like your pretty limited on how to tune your vocals

Mb quarts tend to be harsh for the most part anyways. I would look into a better cd player with more eq functions, like pioneer for example. I wont promise that getting it will fix your problem though.

I mind as well give the rest of my setup if I'm asking for advice:

HU: Panasonic CQ-DFX683U

SUB: RF 10" DVC HX2 500W RMS

AMP1: Kenwood 170x2 (Bridged to 500 RMS)

AMP2: Alpine 70 x 2 (Comps)

Front: MB Quart RCE216 6.5 Comps

Rear: Stock Bose 2 OHM (amped separately)

Me: Newbie

I want to get good clean, crisp and rich sound while salvaging as much as I can of the things I've already spent $$$ on....listen to old school rap, house, some alternative, like the sound of traditional eq "smile" setting...

just buy some LP-1 remotes that will cut the attentuation of the tweet up to

-10db. That should help out with killing the bank.

How are your tweeters mounted? If they are on axis, mount them about 30 degrees off axis. Harshness can be obtained through the mounting axis, reflection, rising response in the frequency response, or the straining of the tweeter because of too low of an xover point.

Was it still too loud when you lowered the setting of the tweeter and turned the highs down a little?

I don't think the harshness is coming from the woofers. Trying lowering your tweeters and see if it fixes the problem. Better to try messing with the stuff you have now then spending money on something else.
