"Breaking In" Period

What they basically mean is that the suspenion on the woofers is a little stiff, so it won't get full extension until it has recieved some playing time. They're not saying you could damage your sub by going all out, they mean you'll need to go all out for a little while before the sub gets as loud as it's supposed to be.

in the owner's manual i got with my Kicker L7's it ses to allow about two weeks break in time for the sub to reach optimum low bass performance so kicker dos not know what they are saying or is kicker the onely compney that ses a break in is not a myth
The fact that the subwoofers suspension will loosen up over time with use is not a myth. It can and has been measured.

The "myth" part is that you need to or must "break in" your subs or designate a certain time period to actively "break in" your subs by playing the volume low for the first day/etc. You do not need to actively break in your subwoofers. Hook them up and play them like you normally would, and they will "break in" (loosen up) over time themselves with regular, normal use.

I remember a case a few years ago when the glue on the VC joint on one of my 12 inch Infinity perfects broke apart.

I mentioned it here and a member called me an idiot for not breaking in the sub properly.

Infinity took full responsibility for the suspension failure.

The moral of this story-

Don't fuggin talk to me unless you have something nice to say.

Squeak pretty much summed it up perfectly. If you listen, many/most subs will have a 'break-in period' where the suspension loosens up, gaining output and SQ usually. Ive heard this over the first few weeks running new subs of my own many times now. But, is it 'necessary' to break in your subs? Not really. Don't expect full performance right out of the box, and being a bit conservative on the volume knob the first few uses would probably be a good idea, but otherwise no worries at all really.

edit: this question should be stickied, it gets asked every other week //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
