Assuming they are the same speaker, one in a well built sealed box vs. a well built ported box, with the same power. I would predict the ported box would get louder.

i had both of my idmaxs in a small sealed box, and then i had on in a huge ported box, but now i want to build one box that is meant for the one of them. i am going for more of a sq setup so i was wondering. so i take it a well built ported box will punch harder than a sealed?

Yup. Though I personally like how some subs sound in sealed enclosures, they can never get as loud as I want them to be. You'll probably kill your subs quicker somehow, too. That's if you like to push them to their limits every day.

If you are going for SQ and want punch, I would recommend sealed.

But, if you want more output than sealed... and still want it to sound good... I would recommend ported tuned low... like 28-30hz.

but if my sub box is in the trunk of my car and my front stage is decently loud and clean, would i even notice the lose of sq between a ported and sealed?

build a box sealed and a box ported and go with what you like the sound of. They will not sound close to the same... You cant decide what you personally like better till you put the same sub in each in the same vehicle...
