quick Kicker L5 question

So i got a 12" l5 as my low end, don't ask me why i didn't go with l7.

The sub is hooked up to a MTX 5601, i dont trust lablel rating anymore but its 600 rms and the l5 takes 600 rms.

The sub does great while at low volumes (20 on my kenwood hu)

but when i turn up the gain and the volume it sounds like it hits something and rattles or thmps.

Am i bottoming out this sub with less the full volume and 3/4 gain or is it just me being paranoid over damaging my sub?

I'm also almost done with my first install so i'll post some pics for you guys to flame on. ( call it criticism with a little more umff )

Look no further then my sig, Its a vented 2.0 tuned to 32hz and whats a dmm?

Also the way some set gain seems impractical to me

this is how i read it should be done: turning off all the eq and LOUD and just crank it to full

and set the gain right before your sub starts to distort

What if someone turns up my SW level or messes with my EQ?

well first if you are lost in setting gains and what not only turn headunit vol up to 75-80% so it doenst casuse distortion in your speakers and go to walmart and buy a dmm digital mulit meter to set gains around 20 bucks

your volts should be 34.64 volts make sure the dmm is on ac volts not dc

and use a test tone to set gains

heres a link to learn all about gains and amps

thx ill try that. Some guy said that you can set it with an oscilloscope but i'm not shelling out that much money for something i wont use that often.

yep if u want to use an o-scop or get it set with that take it by an audio shop and ask them if they will set it for u for free if not throw him 5-10 bucks

So i set my gain buy volt meter

The calculator i used told me that 750 RMS @ 2ohms should be set at 37.7 volts

I slid in a 50hz test tone, set my sub level at +9 as far as i plan to push it.

And turned the volume up to 30 (as high as I'll ever need it)

set the gain to just about half way which is 37.5 volts as my volt meter told me

(the amp was going crazy, kept turning the fan on and off)

However, when i poped in some lil wayne to test the woofer level its relatively quiet

I'm not saying i want eardrum blowing bass out of my woofer but this is ridiculous, it hits like a pair of underpowered 6/9s. what did i do wrong?

must i create a new thread to have my question answered?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

bump:rolleyes:

i had the same problem with only one 12" l7 sealed on 800 watts so i stepped up to a 70hz tone

although with my new setup 2 12's l7's ported only aat the moment getting 400rms a piece used a 50hz and it slams

soon will have 750rms per sub
