Question on pairing and amp turning off

So first of all I want to say that I am new to the whole sub thing. I was joking and posted on Facebook that I wanted a sub for my car and some kid decided to sell me his audio stuff for 150$, so I figured why not. So for this 150$ I received the following:

Pioneer TS-W258D2 10-Inch D2 Regular Core Subwoofer

JL Audio G1700

JVC KDS28 CD Receiver with Front USB and Dual Auxiliary Inputs

So my questions are, is this a good pairing (Sub and Amp)? I have a feeling that since the deck came from walmart it's probably not the best. My second question is, within the decks settings what should I set the bass settings at? My last question, why when I turn my music up to a certain point the amp randomly shuts off? And it's a recent thing, this never happened when I first had it installed. The whole "system" sounds just fine until I get to a certain point and then it stops.

Thanks in advanced for anyone who helps me with these questions.

shutting down frequently sounds to me that you either have the sub wired incorrectly(@1ohms/parallel/parallel),and not at the 4ohm load running in series/series,as it should be,as well, to say...your gain is up more than 12 oclock position, with bass boost more than 9 oclock position, and possibly with loud button on all the time, with bass increase more than +3. thats a dvc 2ohm sub, and a single sub, so you need to run it @4 ohms, as your amp is only 2 ohms stable bridged.check the wiring configuration by pulling the sub out make sure it is wire in series/series, and set gain on amp as stated at the clock positions and deck settings as ive mentioned here, and you should be able to play all day long.you can use loud button once in a while,on a song, but not continiously it will make amp run hot and shut down.to get the most out of that amplifier ,just add another dvc2 sub/same sub, and you will be able to run @2ohms on that amp, or look into getting a 1ohm mono block to get the most out of that sub.the hu may not be the greatest, but jvc isnt a bad hu either, the aresonal are some of the top notch for jvc,and great units.try these out, and also look at a wiring diagram/print out and i think you will be good

That's a neat trick being able to set up an amplifier by guessing at the settings.

J8890, you need to set the gain properly in addition to verifying the subwoofer wiring as advised by audiobaun. Check the forum stickies.
