Question on Chevrolet or GM Models

Yesterday, I went out in search of a new head-unit, front and back speakers. I recently acquired two 12's and an amp, all my sisters old ones and so far she wont or doesn't know the brand. Even though this is irrelevant. Anyways, onto my question.

At the store I finally made the purchase, the salesman said the installer in the back said I had to purchase a $110(?) OnStar bypass system for my car, since the alarm system runs the the radio and all. I went ahead and purchased it, being that if I don't need it I'll just take it back.

Has anyone ever heard of or anything of this nature and is this a necessity?

Any help or pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

yeah a buddy of mine had a deck put in his monte and had to have that bypass installed... 1 bad thing of having onstar!! LOLOL

Ya, that's what I was thinking. The only thing I have issues with it just that I don't have OnStar on my car, never will never have. Unless the OnStar is automatically installed into cars, with a base edition only for "security" purposes...

What you dont have onstar? What year is your Malibu? I dont think you would need it then.

It's a 2003. It's my moms old car, the only kind of upgrades she will ever get is Leather Seats. That's what I was thinking when I bought it(The OnStar Override).

I suppose I could just ask the installer whenever I get it installed, yeah?

you can get a regular gm harness which means you will loose ur seatbelt chimes and that the radio will shutoff when u turn ignition off (you have to grab an ignition wire, no RAP power source).

99% of installers require u to get the module because of the door/seatbelt chimes and legality

unless you want to lose all chimes/sounds in your vehicle, get the module.
