Question about underpowering subs

Ive got two JL 12W3's and one of the voice coils blew after a year of use, so my first question is what would cause that after its been working for awhile with no problems? The other question is im a little tight on cash, so i wanted to just get my new subs, which will be 12W6v2's, and just power them with my old amp until i get enough cash, the old amp is a Directed 600D. Would this be ok?? I also wanted to make sure that the voice coil didnt blow cause of faulty amp or setup because i would hate to install my new subs and have one go.

Ok so keep the gain down, and how do i know what to set the Frequency too, do i want Bass EQ on or off, and subsonic on or off? Oh and lastly what about the phase switch?

set the subsonic filter to the lowest frequency the subs will play. And if you haven't purchased your new subs yet and wanna maybe save a little money you could go for Fi Q subs. They're about 100 bucks less each and handle about double the power. Just a thought.

Set the Subsonic to about 25hz and turn off the bass EQ.
