Question about switching xbox 360 disc drives

The disc drive on my 360 went bad so I need a new one. If I get the exact same type of disc drive currently in my 360 do I have to flash it to get it to play games? I know if you switch to a different type i.e going from a samsung to a benq, you would need to flash the benq for it to play games. But If I go from benq to benq do I still have to flash it to get to play games?

No you can't, they are proprietary to the xbox.

When you put games in it just says Open Tray. As if there is no game in there. I opened it up and took the disc drive out and can't visibly see anything wrong with it so I'm assuming the laser is probably bad or something. I thought I could just switch it with any drive and ended up buying a benq one not realizing I had to flash it to play games. I saw in a youtube video a guy said that you can switch it out without flashing as long as it's the same exact model of disc drive. But I figured I would ask here before I bought another one.
