Question about space & sub mounting (pic inside)

When mounting subs like this, can you make the enclosure smaller than recommended? For instance, if the subs call for 1.5 cubes each ported can you get away with making the box 2-2.5 for both? What are the (dis)advantages to mounting subs like this? Or are there any?

That's what I'm trying to figure out. How does the inverted sub come into play to calculate airspace in the box for it? If it's not "in" the box? How will the smaller (or larger for the single sub in the box) affect things? I'm just trying to figure how how this setup works. I've seen it used a couple of times, and I was just curious about it.
