Question about PS3 and AV Receiver?

I bought a new new Harmon Kardon reciever and hooked up my PS3 through the hdmi. My question is that when playing a blu -ray or even regular dvd it shows pcm 48 hz and I can't change it. After googling pcm 48hz my understanding is that it is lossless audio and the purest form of sound a source can provide, is this true?

What do you have the PS3's digital audio out set to, bitstream or linear PCM?

I have it set like this hdmi->automatic it should pick whatever the source coming from the movie is.
