question about port sizing

i am about to build an enclosure and i noticed when going through the calculators on 12volt.com that the wider i make the port the longer it has to be to achieve the desired frequency.

what are the pros and or cons to making the port bigger or smaller

The larger the port opening the more air flow you'll have, which will reduce port noise and yield smoother air flow. Too big is a problem, as is too small. As a rule of them the port opening surface area should be at least 12 * the square footage of the box.

So for a 2 cubic foot box the minimum port area should be 24 inches.

To calculate port area, multiply port width time port height.
