Question about crossovers

I was in a local B&M discussing home audio and was talking about my experiences in car audio and we got on the topic of off-axis response. I said that a crossover can change off-axis response, and he said that it could not and was only psycho-accoustics. I didn't argue because I didn't have the facts to back up my position, nor do I go places to argue with salesman.

So, can they or can they not.

Side note, I did buy a reciever/dvd-player today. I got the Pioneer Elite EX-500, nice deal for $299. It was quite a bit more in 2003.

more definition is probably required. I don't see how a crossover could affect off axis response within a single speaker, but at the same time, i could see (from 10 seconds of thought) how off-axis response in the crossover region could be affected.

IIRC there is a rane article on this somewhere. it might be relevent. I beleive it compared off axis response between different crossover alignments (linkwitz-riley vs butterworth) in multiple speaker setups.
