Question about 3 way active front stage...

Is it just me, or do everyone's searches turn up irrelevant information? Anyway, I'm sure this is a question that has been repeated thousands of times but, I can't seem to find the answer.

I see a lot of 3 way active crossovers with a front input/output, rear input/output, and a sub input/output. This makes me wonder how It's possible to have a 3 way front stage. There are only enough inputs/outputs for one set of components.

What is the deal? Y splitters? I will most likely start with a two way but, I'm eager to know how the 3 way setup works.
