Q Logic Kicks and what components?

Hey everyone,

I ordered the 6.5" 'C' kickpanels from Q Logic for my '98 Dakota Club Cab and am wondering what would be a good, efficient component set for under $150? I would like to use the Clarion 675usb deck amp for simplicity and cost sake(hence efficient speaker). I dont listen to music too loud, I just like a clean-sounding, detailed reproduction.

The reason I got the kickpanels is because the imaging of the stock door location fires the speaker into your feet. In other words it sucks and makes my head hurt. I hope this was the right move..

Do I need to fiberglass the kickpanel to make it a sealed enclosure? It seems like the volume would be quite small if I did that..How much higher should I set the high pass crossover?

I have a Image Dynamics ID8 sub and Infinity 652i coaxs for the rear.

I listen to all types of music.

Thanks,

Nate

Thanks for your advice. I read up on the PG RSD and they aren't very efficient at 88dB. Most users seem to push them with over 100w RMS while I am probably going to cross them at 120hz and only run 20w RMS/channel.

Do I have any alternatives?

What about the kickpanels?

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but unless you enclose them with a least a cup size of air space, you will have no midbass. Q-forms put the speakers in the right place and angle for imaging, but you need a rigid, sealed or IB enclosure for midbass. Those are the rules.

Also, most q-forms will only fit 5.25 - 6" speakers from the front.

I would get an amp, do the q-forms, and get additional midbass drivers and a low-pass crossover around 90HZ in the doors to give you midbass with the benefit of the good imaging the q-form speaker placement can give you. That's the hot setup.

For efficient speakers in that price range, see cerwin Vega V-Max-5 at onlinecarstereo.com - 92db sensitivity. They are also slim mount and some of the best I have heard under $300.00

Gary S, thank you very much for your advice. I am powering the ID8 with a JBL 300.1 that I got from Cardomain for $70! Unfortunately it is not a multi-channel.

I read up on the 3-way system you described...essentially run the components off the HU >120hz and the midbass off an external amp.

I found a low pass crossover that plugs inline with the RCA to the amp. It is 100 hz made by FMOD. Is that what you're suggesting?

What is a good budget 6.5" midbass?

Your HU is not going to supply sufficient power to run a set of comps period. 88db is about average for mids.

Buy a set of PG RSd and buy something like a Cadence TXA-1502 for $99 shipped. You should be able to get the comps, amp and wire for $200 or less. Just put the 6.5 in the door or get the 5.25 PG RSd set.

Good Budget 6.5" midbass check these out $90 shipped but they will need an amp: http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20648

If you do the PG RSd 5.25 in the Q-Forms and the ones I linked just get a Cadence TXA-3004 or step-up to the TXA-6004. If you do the PG RSd 5.25 comp in Q-Forms, TXA-3004 and the midbass I linked in the doors you can do it all for about $325.00$335.00 including all your wiring. If you step-up to the TXA-6004 you are looking at about $375-$380 for everything.

Great set-up.IMO

Listen to Genxx - I would amp all the speakers before spending money on Q-forms. The radio power is much less than you think... typically only about 12 watts RMs 20 - 20k (Unlike home audio, there are no laws to regulate how manufacturers specify power in car audio products, many exaggerate, lie) in comparison to an outboard amp... it's just not enough... put it this way... you would have better overall sound with coaxes up front amped than comps on just head unit power.

Excellent advice and research, thank you for sharing genxx.

Unfortunately, I already purchased the Q-Forms before I found this website.

I think I will amp the RSD with a 50x2 Orion that I have in my 240SX (getting engine rebuilt) and see how it sounds from there.

Is it possible to mount the tweeters of the components higher up in the door panel to achieve a better soundstage without the Q-Forms? Is there a formula for this?

From what I gather, I will get better midbass from door-mounted components than in the QForms.

Near-equal path lengths is more important than height, we hear direction primarily in the horizontal anyway.

If you take measurements, door mounted tweeters would have one tweeter significantly closer to you than the other as compared with kick mounted tweeters. Kicks are better.

Gary is all over this one already.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Agree 100% I would shoot for the PL and going with the kicks.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Thanks guys, you make me feel better about spending money on the kicks. lol...

I will update this thread once I get everything installed. Probably another couple weeks..

Ok just as an update...

I ordered the following:

-PG RSD 65CS from ebay.

- Cadence 1502 $99 ebay. Seems like a good amp for CHEAP.

- 35 sq ft. of eDead V1SE...hopefully have some left over to do the doors on my 240sx.

Now I suppose I should upgrade the 8 gauge amp kit to a 4 or 2 gauge as well as my big three...

Will update in 2 weeks.

I'M EXCITED!!!
