Punchy bass from kickpod

I built front kickpods for ADS 6.5" comps and the bass sounds boomy/punchy. Doesn't sound realistic. Even when I turn the bass all the way down and slowly raise it it gets boomy right away. Filled the pods with poly-fill. Should I try another fill? Partsexpress sells stuff called Acousta Stuf. I read an article at elitecaraudio where a guy says he cuts a small hole in the bottom to take the place of resistive dampening. The speakers will fit in the door but will interfere with the window handle. I had Polk MOMO 5.25" in the door before this and thought I'd try to get some better imaging with comps/kickpods. I spent weeks building these things. They sound better laying on the floor before I made the pod.
