Probox with 10W6?

Currently I have a JL 10W6 powered by a JL 500/1 in a prefab box ported box 16 wide, 15 Deep, 12 High about 1.189 cubic feet (less with internal baffle). The enclosure is 3/4 MDF and well constructed but I have no idea what it is tuned to. A good friend who is an installer said it sounds like it is probably tuned to 42-44 hertz. It's not bad but he said he could build an enclosure and tune it lower and it would sound much better. I checked into building a box and it can get expensive, I would prefer to just buy a good enclosure already built.

The specs on a sealed box on JL's website states it would be tuned to 37.89. I've considered going sealed but listen to a lot of rock, trance and dubstep, I like the way the ported box sounds.

I have a found probox locally for $100 bucks but have no idea what it is tuned to and if it would be an improvement over the box I currently have. Has anyone used the below probox with a 10W6, should I consider buying this and will it sound better than the current generic box and be worth the money? Wish I could try before I buy and also hear a 10W6 in a sealed box to compare. It's really a tough decision. I could buy the probox and just sell it if not happy with it.

I would recommend building your own. You get the satisfaction of being able to show off what you made, and the learning experience never hurts.

I have though about building my own but due to the cost, materials, time involved and not having experience I don't want to screw around, not get it right and have to build multiple boxes getting it right. Checking locally it's not cheap to have one built for me either, but doable. I found that probox locally for 100 and there is used one I am trying to get off the craig list for $60.00. I'm just wondering if it would sound good with the 10W6, searched the internet can't find any decent information on it. Will probably call them on Monday and see what they say it's tuned to. Don't really like the getto looks of it either... but it's in the back of the car and not too aweful... wish it didn't say "SUPER BASS" on the top. Any other pre-built boxes on the internet I should look at as another alternative?

My box for my Powerbass 3xl was $105. This includes the speaker wires and having the sub actually installed into the box. It is unfinished, but finishing it is $30 more. And with the guy who built it (audio shop), he said i can bring it back at any time to have it finished.

I'm not sure how far U are from Albany, but, I've got some guys here who build pretty cheap. My box for 3 8s was like 42x18x11 ported with a 4" Aero and iirc he quoted me like 115 maybe 120 for it.

Hes around on the forums rarely as pawn man. Actually has a build up in the logs with his van with 16 18s.

That JL will not really like the probox setup. Your better bet is take the advice that has been given and have one designed and/or built for you. The overall performance will be much better over going with another "prefab" enclosure.

Pro box builds a good box, structurally speaking, but they are usually tuned at or right near the box you currently have. They take advantage of most 40-45hz bass boost features found on many amps. How do you feel about the sound you are getting now? Do you know how much port area you have in your current box?

ps...1.5 sounds a little big for that sub.

The box I have now is W: 16, H: 12 D: 15, port slot L: 10.5" W: 1 5/16"

I like the sound from the sub and the enclosure, plenty for the small cabin of a scion TC but I have been told it would be much better if it was tuned lower. The specs for the ported box on JL's website is larger and states tuned to 37 hertz. So I keep wondering what it would sound like in an enclosure of higher quality. I was using the same enclosure with my 10W3v3 and I thought it sounded smoother, but the 10W6 definitely hits harder and handles the power better. Really wish I could hear a few other system with good sub woofer setups in them to get a better idea. I have been out of car stereo for a long time and am just not sure.

Thanks for the info on the pro box, it sounds like it would not be much different than what I currently have in the car so I'll stay away from that one and save my money.

What about this one? http://www.speakerboxesusa.com/sub-boxes-woofer-manufacturer-single-jl-318/

Okay, I'm tired of looking at pre-fab boxes. I'm going to have one built locally and just spend the money, spoke with the installer that has helped me and he said he can build it to JL specs but that he has actually built boxes similar to JL's HO boxes and he prefers to tune it into the low 30's between 32-34. He's been doing it for 25 years and has designed and built boxes for the JL that were tested against the JL HO box and were better. He's going to send me some box dimensions so I know how it will fit in the car. Told him I would like to be in the mid 30's but not go much bigger than JL recommended ported enclosure specs/size. He also explained the boom sound and loss of control the sub gets in my current box and why I have the gain turned down and the sub turned down, said tuning it lower will be better for the sub as well in regards to longevity.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction and away from the pro box. I'm sure going custom built will be worth the money. I just don't understand why someone doesn't make a prefab box for the 10W6 off JL Specs or similar to the HO or Sealed JL boxes.

Some miss information there, but overall should work out pretty well. BTW the JL HO enclosures are junk as well.

Prefab enclosures are all tuned very high, there are many that would "work" with that sub. None that would work with your goals or 99% of anyone who would use that sub. Also a prefab enclosure has horrible build quality.

In the end you are always better off getting an enclosure that will be designed around your car, products, and your goals. Then enclosure is the back bone to the sub stage...if you go wrong there your whole sub stage will suffer.
