Power series J B L and powersupply talk...

Well I have been looking around at amps to power my project tc. I original wanted and still want an mc4000M mcintosh but it is a bit out of my grasp as of this moment. In this world of ever changing amps I have noticed one thing. Power supplies have gotten CHEAP! Well not cheap, but well matched. What I mean is a good quality amp of yesteryear rated at 100w per channel often had a powersupply rated at 500-800 watts! They were overbuilt monster designs with one important factor that many amps of today lack. Dynamic power. The amps ability to be driven beyond it's rated power and to maintain some kind of control while doing it.

Have you noticed cheaper amps of today have ratings like...

100w x 2 into 4 ohm

150w x 2 into 2 ohm

And then only 300w x 1 into 4 ohm or 500w x 1 into 2 ohm????? WHAT GIVES!!!! This is NOT how class a/b amps should behave!!!

What happened to effectivly doubleing power into 2 ohms! or doing the same bridged! My idea of a well built amp of yesteryear did

100w x 2 into 4 ohm

200w x 2 into 2 ohm

400w x 2 into 1 ohm

And then 400w x 1 into 4 ohm or 800w x 1 into 2 ohm!

The old amps and well built amps did this because of well built powersupplies. No fancy circuits to regulate power / current to keep a lid on things or limit output according to the cheapo powersupply they install to cut cost down. Now these new amps that only have 1 testie do sound great! They will do all anyone needs. But there is a huge difference when driven to the limit. Most of them let the smoke out when pushed a little passed there limit. While old amps just started to glow red hot but kept rocking!

Anyways, down to it.. Been really looking at the JBL powerseries amps. Got to check them out top to bottom. They seem to be of the breed of amp of yesteryear built and armed to the teeth. Anyone else agree?? Any reviews..? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

PWR: 200x2@4, 400x2@2, 1100x1@4

How's that for a power supply

Does more power at 4ohms than it does at 2ohms.

Higher impedance usually equates to a lower THD.

Which doesnt really have a HUGE affect on subwoofers but its nice to know its only .03% THD //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I will be recieving one of those soon.

My old autotek is rated for 50x4 and 100x1 @4ohms. This rating is complete garbage.

2 30A fuses and it only does 300W...shureee

At 2ohms on the sub channel is definetly WAY more than 100W.

Its a US Amps Xterminator 1600.2

On XT we use TIP 35 and 36, 70n06 FETS, An American Magnetics’ torroid that is wound with 14 gauge wire. 2 sided epoxy PCB, Two blue LED’s, 24dB crossovers .10gram per MM heat sink which is rounded on both sides. Many top grade components are used. We even use mica insulators and heat sink grease to insure best heat transfer and product stability.
For bottom of the lineup it seems pretty dang good.
