Here is a mostly unbiased statement that shows how mostly everyone is overreacting to stereotypes:
Compare this: Underage abuse of alcohol and underage use of alcohol.
Some kids, under 21 or 18, depending on local laws, abuse alcohol. That is simply the truth. They obtain it and abuse it. They do irresponsible things with it and when affected by it.
Other kids, also under 21 or 18, enjoy but do not abuse alcohol. They do not do loud parties and pass out drunk. Those might enjoy a good mixed beverage, sit back, and read a book or watch a movie.
Now which kid do you always hear stories about? The abuser.
Which drug user do we hear stories about? The abuser.
Which drug users seem to be on the defense here? Those who enjoy but do not overly abuse drugs. (IE, don't go to school high, don't let it disturb their professional life)
Which drug users are the antidrug people flaming? The abuser. The one who gets high in school bathrooms, at the bus stop before school, and is high during class. Those that giggle to each other and tell stories of how high they got at so and so's party.
For instance, I myself, am of legal age to enjoy tobacco products, but choose to enjoy and not abuse them. I do not require them to function before or after I go to work or school. I use tobacco products in my down time, with usually a couple of friends, and I enjoy it.
Now, can we all agree that those who abuse ANYTHING are people that are bad, not too bright, dumb, whatever insult we have? And can we not prosecute the casual user and enjoyer?
