Why not get a 2 way alarm, don't hook up any siren/horn, and don't hook up the parking lights. They thief will have no clue that you're car has an alarm, but you're pocket will be vibrating. You can go and catch him in the act and threaten/attack him with your baseball bat or nine, whichever you prefer.

think youll need a pretty big tank for it to be playin for 5 mins straight

I guess that's what the train horn would be for. We all know that we pay no attention to alarms when we hear them. I guess it would be best to have a switch to enable the relay that would control the train horns. That way, if you know you're parking where you won't be within the given distance for your 2 way to work, you can flip the switch and have the alarm sound. Otherwise, you could leave the switch in the other position.
