Port means to use ports.

Vent is a slot port.

They are the same though. At least I think.

Hi technically there is no difference between a ported or vented box. However, what the guys here are mincing words about is that in the last 5 years or so people have started using a "vent" type of slot for a port in sub boxes. The advantage to this was to reduce the wind noise that ports can make at high volumes if the subwoofer is moving a lot of air. Slot style vents are able to let the air move out more freely and not produce a "chuffing" sound. So that's what the guys here are talking about, and why you see most nicely done ported boxes use flared ports so that the airs moves out with less turbulence. If installed properly slot type vents work nicely and have inherent disadvantage to tradition ported boxes. They are more time consuming to build and can't be "fixed" easily by simply shorting the port like the regular cylindrical ports can. Hope that helps.

Your post was pretty good but I wanted to point out a slight technicallity here. Actually, slot ports are MORE prone to chuffing due to the fact that there is more wall friction in a slot port for a given port area. They just integrate well into a box, you don't need to buy anything other than wood, they are easier to "finish", and you get a small length bonus if you use a wall of the box as a port wall. The advantage is really only aesthetic...

Ported/Vented. Its all the same unless you ask Below 30.

I was always under the impression that ported meant just a "port" in the box, while vented meant "maze-like" or something...but I'm getting a sealed

Let's put it this way, a port will be the standard tubes or slot style wood -into- the box. Vented will be just the cut out of the hole in the wood, to escape the air.
