Ported or downfiring

I got a ext. cab s10 with two 12" L7's with a down firing sealed 1.25 cu. ft. box to me it seems to fall off at the deep bass and when it is cranked. If i make a ported box will it help me out any? Will a ported increase my db vs. a down firing?
