can a fiberglass box be ported? if so, is it the same process to calculate tuning as it is a MDF box?
Sure, after it's built. Doesn't do you much good if you wanted 2 cf but you find out after it's built that it's only 1.6. If there are compound and complex curves involved, you aren't "calculating anything. You can only build it and measure what you have. If it won't work for what your sub needs to sound right, into the trash it goes. There's a reason that most pure fiberglass enclosures are sealed. Much more forgiving. It's not hard to calculate internal volume of a fiberglass enclosure.
.5 cf could have a HUGE impact. That amount can easily trash the response of an otherwise good sub. If all you care about is loud, it might not make that big a difference, but if you want it to sound good, it needs to be pretty exact. You don't have the 10-25% fudge factor that a sealed box may give you. Close isn't good enough.Very true. I guess it really depends on how complex the curves are. You can always get a decent estimate for how large the enclosure will be by breaking everything into rectangles and triangles. Again, this will vary depending on how complex it is. Either way, I don't think it will take much work, even on complicated enclosures. Being about .5 cubic feet off on a ported enclosure won't effect the driver's performance too much really.
you can measure the box when you put the fleece before resin it, its a little work to but you can get almost the size you want..5 cf could have a HUGE impact.
