Port tuning on a 18" DC Level 4XL

I am looking for suggestions on port tuning (recommended Hz) for a 18" DC Level 4XL D2 pushed by a US Amps Merlin MD2D 1500W@1ohm.

This will be going in the back of my family van and I have about 6-7cubes (maybe 8cu if I am willing to give up more trunk space) to work with.

This will never be metered. I just want to rock on out to some old school Techmaster PEB, Bass Mechanic, etc. FWIW, I like the lows //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

What is a good frequency to shoot for to make this sound good?

Here are the subs specs:

Mounting Depth 9.25"

Mounting Hole Diameter 16.75"

Motor Width 8.75"

Weight 56.5lbs

VC Diameter 3" Flat 8 layer

Magnet Weight 50lbs

Power Handling RMS/Peak 1500/3000

Impedance D 1 or 2ohm

Sd 1159.00 cm²

Fs 31.86Hz

Qms 7.25

Qes 0.33

Qts 0.31

Xmax 26mm

Sensitivity 94.77

Suggested Sealed N/A

Suggested Ported 5.0³-8.0³ ft

I have a DC Level 4 18 tuned to 32hz, it def likes the lows, but sounds good on everything. The upper end suprised me too.

30hz would be a little better on the lows, and 6.5 cubic feet net would be a nice size for that sub.

^^Thats very encouraging to hear. It means a lot and I am looking forward to seeing what this can do.

Just two hypothetical boxes, the outter dimensions would be similar:

one is 5cuft tuned for 28hz,

and the other is 7.5 tuned for 32hz.

How much different would they sound?

I realize that the bigger box would be more efficient (louder) off lower power, but the one tuned for lower hz might have a smoother and deeper roll off.

Anyone have any suggestions on these two boxes?

If you had to choose between the 2 then without question go w/ the 7.5ft3 @ 32hz setup. The other box is just all wrong in more than one way.

Def agree with you on that, however, my box was 5.5ft3 at 32hz and sounded great. I considered a larger box to dig those lows a little better however. Even with the low tuning, the sub would honestly benifit from a larger enclosure esp on the lows.
