I need help with my sub it keeps on giving me a popping sound my setup is 2 12 inch l5's 600 rms each total of 1200 rms subs are wired down to 2 ohms powering them is a lightening audio 3000md does 1100 rms @ 2 ohms i have 4 gauge from battery to amp then 12 gauge from the amp to the subs and the subs are wired down to 2 ohms with 12 gauge everything was bought brand new not even 6 months ago subs were properly broken in and the gain on my amp isnt even up a quarter of the way everything else is down not using bass boost and the bass settings on my headunit are set to 0

every so often i will get a loud popping sound from the subs ... i believe its only one of the 2 but im not sure the sound almost sounds like someone knocking on wood i dont smell anything burning and theres no smoke

i was thinking that the problem was my voltage dropping was somehow sending a clipped signal so i was going to do the big 3 and throw in a hc800 battery in my trunk

has anyone else had this problem or know what it is/a way to fix it?

Thank you

ok well i just messed around and disconnected the sub on the right leaving the sub on the left to play by itself and it sounded great so then i reconnected the sub on the right and disconnected the one on the left and the sub on the right sounded horrible im going to check the wires connecting to the sub in a little bit just to make sure nothing came undone

but even still what could cause this?

Is it only when you turn the amp on and off? Sorry if you said it already, i didn't see it. Well if it happens when you power it off, the amp is malfunctioning. Not really a bad thing, but not a good thing either. See the amps these days come with a safe shutoff feature. Rather than discharging all of the power at once when you turn the amp off (Like it sounds like what you are doing), it does it slower or something, I'm not sure exactly how it works, but it doesnt discharge all power immediately, which is why it could be popping.

nope sorry i didnt specify the popping sound happens while music is playing and its only on one of the subs not both and it happens during continuous bass lines

Does it sound like the sub is smacking on something? Like a clacking noise? Probably only happens when you play it loud. Your sub is bottoming out, your pushing it past its excursion limits. If it only happens to one sub while not the other then your coil is probably close to going.

^^i have a feeling thats what it is the only thing i cant understand is why it happened i should still be able to give the subs more power even if i turned the amp up all the way number wise it wouldnt even add up to the 1200w rms rating
