Please help with equalizer questions.

Even the basics. I've searched, and still am searching, but am not finding much about equalizers. I'm not quite happy with the sound quality of my current set-up (particularly bringing out the lower mids and separating a lower bass drum kick from a bass guitar in rock/hardcore) and would like to put in an equalizer. Even something teaching me about how they hook up to your system would be great. Do you run a separate power line from your battery for it? Or if there are decent ones in the under $100 range. Cheaper the better and probably 7 band would be fine unless you guys think I need more than that for my problem. I'm currently running an amped sub but no amp on speakers. The amp on speakers is subject to change and will definitely change if needed to run the equalizer and bring out the sound I'm looking for. Thanks.

Before you even think about adding an equalizer, amp your speakers. Otherwise it would just be a waste of money.

I planned on amping the speakers. I'm actually looking for a new amp for my sub (300rms/600peak) and using my current amp on my speakers. I still want to get the equalizer, though, so I'm still looking into them if anyone can help. I have finally found some info on them, but still need some suggestions on good ones. They seem to be much harder to find for a new person than anything else in the car audio world.

If you're having problems with midbass, following the steps in the "Sound Deadening and You" thread that's stickied here is mandatory.

Otherwise, all the processing power in the world can't help...an EQ can only help if the underlying installation is solid.
