Please help!! Bass knob or equalizer?

Ok so I have a comp D kicker 12 with a Rocksford fosgate 400 watt amp and when I listen to my music the bass sounds good but when I turn it up the highs go up but the bass weakens. My bass isn't as strong as it should be and only sounds good on a certain volume level. Do I need a bass knob to turn the bass up and leave the highs alone or do I need an equalizer to balance them out? My bass should go up when I turn the volume up not get drowned out. Do I need to change the settings on my radio or on the amp? Please help

If you turn the volume up and your sub is not getting any louder.... Your amp is maxed out. When you try and turn it up any louder the output actually diminishes from distortion. That's what sounds like is happening. New box or a new amp is your only cure. Not familiar with the comp d so I can't tell you if the sub is worth building a box for

Before you replace anything try to retune the gaim setting on the amp. First turn the gain all the way down, choose your bassiest song turn the radio up to just before your door speakers start to distort and then turn the gain up till ether the sub isn't getting any louder or it distorts. Then see how that sounds to you. You still may need a better box built.
