I have had 2 German Shepherds, and I can tell you the difference between them, and Pitts. German Shepherds are VERY protective dogs. Mine would never hurt me. Period. I would like to see a statistic showing how many German Shepherds have bit their owners? My dog will scare the ever loving shit out of you if you come in our house, they are very weary, and skeptical of new people.
Now for the person saying German Shepherds bite more people than any other breed in the USA, I believe it. That being said, there is a good reason behind it. They are one of the most popular dogs in the united states, and happen to be one of the more agressive ones. Simple math would show that they are more likely to bite someone, because there are more of them around.
Pitt bulls are stupid dogs, and are too big for their own good anymore. They are a bigger cousin of the Staffordshire Terrier. There are Pitts that are now over 120lbs. The Staffordshire Terrier was around 50lbs, and do you know what they were bred for? Bull Baiting. The dog was bred to fight 2000 lb bulls that people pissed off so much to get entertainment out of it... This is not an owner issue, it is an instinct issue. This dog is bred to not fear things much larger than itself. Nobody sees a problem with gangsters now selectively breeding a dog that has no fear to be in excess of 100lbs?
Could you imagine a 100lb chihuaha (spelling?) Stupid little dogs that are insanely agressive. Would you say it was an owners issue when they bit everyone around. I know you can work some dog whisperer shit on them, but most of them are nippy little dogs, that are very possesive of one person.
Moral of the story, some dogs weren't meant to be that big. They are now being bred to be muscular, and huge for no other reason than to look cool. Well it may look cool, but that little bite is now turning into your face being ripped off.
