Pioneer AVH-P4400BH & Classic iPod

First of all, I used the search function, but it could not find any mention of AVH-P4400BH anywhere in these forums. Strange...

I have an iPod 30GB Classic purchased in 2005. The software is up-to-date (v 1.2.1) according to iTunes. Yet my new HU will not recognize it. I keep getting something like "unrecognized format" as an error message.

The iPod worked just fine with my older Pioneer DEH-P49001B CD receiver. A workaround using a USB flash drive works just fine, but I'm curious as to why the iPod won't. The manual says iPod Classic should work.
