pioneer avh-p4200dvd external hard drive question

hey all been a while since i been around have a question for you guys.

have the hu stated usb flash drive works great(about 4-7 secs to read format) but using a external 2.5" hard drive is very slow to read format(3+ minutes to read format) when there are lots of files on the hd.

with a small amount of files, or all in one folder its much faster but still nowhere near as fast.

any suggestions? if not ill just take the external back and grab a (blah) 16gig flash
