Picking out a double din head unit for WRX

Hi Guys,

I just picked up a 2013 WRX and the stock audio leaves much to be desired. Its been a few years since I have purchased any new audio equipment. I am looking for a head unit that has good android comparability and is satellite radio ready. I can pass on navigation since I use my phone for that.

I see the 2013 Pioneer head units are out. Does anyone have any experience with them yet? This one looks about right to me.

AVH-X3500BHS - NEW! - 2-DIN Multimedia DVD Receiver with 6.1" WVGA Touchscreen Display, MIXTRAX, Bluetooth®, HD Radio™ Tuner, SiriusXM Ready, and Advanced App Mode for iPhone® 4S and iPhone® 4 | Pioneer Electronics US

I may just end up purchasing the one listed above, but I wanted to post this and get the experts opinion. Maybe there is a magical head unit I have overlooked?

I haven't had the chance to play with Pioneers new line yet, but it looks like on paper they really stepped up their game.

If it has what you need I'd say get it.

Poast pics!! I have a 2012, myself. I might trade that bish in on a 2014.

The OEM speakers aren't all that bad though, man. Try them out first. If you upgrade though, the JL C5 tweeters are awesome and fit right in the factory sails like they were made for that spot. Ton of choices on midwoofers but depth is right at 3", maybe 3.25ish.

Thanks for the heads up on the JL tweeters. My plan is to swap the head unit and get the sub and amp installed, then tackle speakers when it gets a little warmer out.

Did you go with the hatch or sedan? Did you find a good place to mount an amp?

I didn't care for the sound from the avic-x930bt (pioneer).

I'd recommend Alpine's line or even an Eclipse. Anything with a 24 bit DSP.

It is possible that the new Pioneers have improved. I would definately go to best buy or someplace and preview a double din before you buy one. They can be hit or miss.

Let me add that Pioneers have a great user interface and are extremely user friendly imo.

I have a sedan. I've been 2nd guessing the choice though. A hatch would have made the sub stage much easier. It bothered me that, even though it's a WRX, that it looked a little too similar to other "hot hatches" like the ms3 or whatever. I dunno. I friggin love hatches though. If I do trade it in on a 2014, I'm getting a hatch.

I have the highs amp uunder the seat like so...

Except that it's cleaned up and mounted, of course.

Single din in the dash, but it's a Pioneer 80prs now.

Dynaudio MW162's in the doors and the aforementioned JL C5's in the sails.

Wholly crap, you do go through a lot of wood. Thanks for posting pics. I wish I had a shop or a garage so I could do some experimenting of my own. For now, I will have to settle for these guys. I hope I can fit the Kenwood under the passenger seat.
