thats pretty easy to do actually, just take a pic of it hood up hood down, crop the engine out, fluff the edges a little bit, crop the hood and turn the opacity down a little.

that's not a real hood, it's a photoshop...

here's one way i can think of.... take a picture with the hood closed, and take a picture with the hood off. open the pic with the hood off in photoshop, paste the pic with the hood closed over top the original as a second layer, outline the hood and define transparency...

You don't have to take the hood off man, if someone gets me two pics from the same position, or at least close

depending on the angle of the shot, would need to have the entire engine bay visible with the hood open to get a desireable effect, i would think...

well u can always just make part of the engine transparent if u cant get pictures that are close enough.
