Photography Contest...

I'm working on my first submission for a photography contest, and the object is to depict "Sorrow" without the inclusion of any people or animals.

I've got the idea down, and now I need some opinions on which composition looks the best overall.

They're all numbered for easy identification. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

2 and 5 are the only decent ones with good value. 1 has good value but it's crooked and not in an intriging(sp?) way, but in a bad way. and the cell phone ruins the picture.

composition on 6 is the best IMO but there are no true whites, so i would have to say 5 is the best out of all of them, but you cropped it too low.

i think 4 would be the best hands down if it were in focus...

but all that is someone who took a lot of drawing and painting classes, and only 2 years of photo so maybe your teacher is looking for other things..

It's for an online contest, but either way, I appreciate the criticism. The cell phone was only in the pic because of the text message ("Dad's dead"), but I really didn't like it in the end, either. Pic 4 was a "depth of field" experiment, and unfortunately, I think that focusing STRICTLY on the razorblade wasn't the best choice. Pic 2 also had the whole "Depth of field" thing going, but wasn't as extreme. As far as 6 having no true whites, well, I planned on going back and adjusting the "Levels" in Photoshop anyway...I just had to figure out which pic with which I would do that. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Anyway, though, I do appreciate your criticism immensely! Thank you!

7 and 8 the objects are too spaced out in my opinion, makes the picture look disorganized. I like 4 the most, but possibly a bit too much fun with the dof. If you photoshop a bit, you could get a really nice one from what you have.

They seem a little "bland". With black and shite photos your looking for a BROAD range of grays, you want to cover the entire spectrum, you haven't really done that here. Something you might try is turning down the lights a little and have a single stream of light like its comming in from the window or something illuminate the spot where the glass and whiskey are.

Just my .02$

2 or 5 gets my vote. If you could focus a little farther back in the picture in 5, I think you would have a winner. I would like having the pills in focus, and the whisky bottle in the back a little blurry. I think that would look the best:cool: //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif
